Aspiring to be the best at what God has for us can be challenging. Even when we think we know best, God can surprise us with something more. That’s exactly what happened to Karen Simon, so I took the time to talk with her for my podcast.
Karen had always aspired to be an actress. From the time she was a child, she could remember wanting to be in front of the camera. Acting and entertaining was her dream; so much so that she went to acting school so she could perfect her craft and deliver the right way. Her dream never left her. Even when she moved from her home state of Maryland to Atlanta, Georgia, acting was still at the forefront.
Then one day, she did something different. She was encouraged to get behind the camera. And that changed her life forever. Karen went from being an actress to being the one who made the big decisions and called the shots from behind the camera. This change didn’t happen overnight. She went to school to become a producer to hone her craft. She took the knowledge she already had for acting and what she learned about producing, to create her own production company, Lady K Productions. Now, she is engrossed in TV, film, and documentary projects that are currently underway.
Never Miss an Opportunity
Karen was a quick study. Although she initially financed her first fruits using her funds, she soon learned that was not the way to go. She learned the importance of networking and pitching to investors to get the funding she needed for future projects.
“I don’t like missed opportunities.” – Karen Simon
While for many of us, networking doesn’t come easy, Karen will tell you it’s something that needs to be done. Pitching her company to investors had to happen for her business to move forward. To not do so, is to allow opportunities to pass you by.
Other Sage Advice
Some other sage wisdom Karen gives to anyone trying to push their business is:
Do the research: Do the research needed to learn and know the language people in your industry speak.
Never give up: Revisit the important conversations you need to have with people.
Stay confident: If you don’t believe in your business, who will?
Learn from every No: It’s expected you’ll get some no’s along the way, and that’s okay. Learn from the no’s and keep pushing.
Write out your vision: When God gives you something to do, write it down.
Build your team: Build a team you can rely on and make sure to include an attorney and a CPA.
Bringing It All Together
“Move when God says you move … We all have a purpose. If you follow God, everything falls in line.”
Finally, Karen reminds us that we all have a purpose. The hard work comes in going after it. Reaching your purpose is going to be challenging; there will be ups and downs. But she encourages us to stick with it. If you follow God, everything will eventually fall in line.
